Listening with your eyes

Yes, it’s an art. Focused. On purpose.

Why?

When you look an individual in the eyes, you connect with their soul. They are comforted by your attentiveness. Your eyes envelop and communicate “it’s okay, I am here”. Do not speak until their eyes tell you to. Just listen through your built-in lenses.

Forget about time.

I had the wonderful privilege of listening with my eyes two days ago. A brokenhearted elderly person sat before me. Lonely and forgotten. The love of his life had died seven months prior… 44 years, 4 weeks and 14 days of memories. The funeral was the final seal of being no longer anything to anyone.

Solitude accompanied by tears.

Questions accompanied by an empty heart.

Fragility accompanied by abandonment.

All I could think of during this precious capsule of time was this quote: “Come sit with me, for I too am fluent in silence”. (Author unknown).

I was fluent. I felt grateful. We shared a prayer.
